WHEN DID INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY COME UP?
The history of the 8th of March International Working Women's Day, which was announced by the United Nations in 1977, is very old.
The beginning of the fight of women to have equal rights with men is considered to be the strikes of hundreds of women working in the textile industry in New York, USA on 8th of March 1857 to protest low wages, long working hours and inhuman working conditions. In the fire that broke out during these strikes, as many of the women could not escape from the barricades set up in front of the factory, 129 women died, 52 years after these events (1910) thanks to the suggestion of Clara Zetkin at the Socialist International meeting, it was decided to celebrate the struggle for women's rights and women's unity, which started in 1857, as “Women's Day” every year.
It was celebrated as the International Women's Year in 1975. Within the scope of the activities, the United Nations started to celebrate 8th of March as “International Women's Day”. Two years later, in 1977, 8th of March was accepted as “Women's Rights, International Peace Day” at the United Nations General Assembly.
Two main reasons were cited as a reason for this acceptance. These were: the need for women to provide equality and self-development for the protection of world peace, social development and the exercise of basic human rights. It was accepted that giving women equal rights would strengthen world peace.
Today, International Women's Day has different meanings for women. 8th of March is now a special day to remember how women came to this day in terms of women's rights. Even if positive developments have been made in the field of women's rights in the recent years, many problems for women are still not resolved. On the International Working Women’s Day, the achievements of women in society, politics and business life are celebrated. At the same time, gender inequalities are emphasized and protests are organized as a continuation of the initial events.
